A. Checkrides

Each licensed pilot must have a checkride with an instructor every six months (where the pilot has 100 hours PIC, the instructor, at his discretion, may issue a one year checkride).

Recreational Pilot Permit holders must have a checkride with an instructor every three months if they have under 50 hours PIC time; otherwise every six months.

An open book written examination is required before the checkride once a year.

A checkride on the Seneca allows the pilot to fly all Club aircraft.

When a member is due for a checkride and wants the opportunity to fly both the 172's and Warrior, they must do a checkride on the aircraft they have flown the least in the last six months/one year.  That checkride will then be valid for both the 172 and Warrior.

To fly the Hawk XP, a checkride on the XP is required which will also satisfy requirements for the Warrior.  For members who have never flown the Warrior, an initial checkride is required.

The Director of Flight Operations reserves the right to request a checkride at any time if there are concerns about safety, lack of airmanship, etc.

B.  Currency Requirements

In addition to the Club's checkride policy, a licensed pilot must fly a Club aircraft once every 60 days to maintain currency.  For the RPP holder, this requirement is once every 30 days.  Should the member not be current, a short flight of a couple of circuits with an instructor is required.

In order to allow a checkride on the Warrior/172 to count for both aircraft, you must maintain 60 day currency on PFC aircraft as has always been the case.  As well, you must maintain 90 day currency on the type you want to fly.  For example, if you have not flown the Warrior in 100 days but you have flown a 172 within 60 days, you may book a rental flight in a 172 but a couple of circuits with an instructor would be required in the Warrior.

C.  Mountain Checkrides

For a licensed pilot to fly in mountainous areas, the pilot must have been checked out in the mountains.  A mountain checkride is approximately two hours and is booked in a three hour slot.  Under no circumstances are Club aircraft permitted in mountainous areas after dark.

D. Student Pilots

  • For pilots operating with a student pilot permit, the weather shall not be less than good VFR
  • Pilots flying solo with a student pilot permit, when doing circuits at Boundary Bay, must have a ceiling of at least 1500 ft and the visibility must be at least 3 miles.
  • For flights in the practice areas, the ceiling must be at least 2000 ft and the visibility at least 5 miles.
  • For cross countries, it is understood that the minima will be greater and the supervising instructor at the time will assess if the weather is good enough for the intended flight.
  • Student pilots shall not fly solo if the wind speed is greater than 20 kts.
  • The cross wind component cannot be greater at the airport where the student intends to take off or land than the limits published in the aircraft's operating handbook.
  • All student pilots must plan to be on the ground not less than 30 minutes before official darkness.
  • All student pilots must be supervised by an instructor; the student's instructor must arrange supervision.

E.  All Pilots

  • Night flying weather limits shall be more conservative than those for day flying.  For circuits, the ceiling shall be at least 2000 ft and the visibility shall be at least 5 miles.
  • For flights in the practice area the ceiling and visibility shall be at least 3000 ft and 8 miles.
  • For cross countries in the Lower Mainland, ceiling and visibility shall be at least 5000 ft and 10 miles.
  • There should be no cloud lower than 1000 ft above your anticipated altitude, no precipitation, and no possibility of ground fog (watch your temperature/dew point spread)
  • There is no night, VFR, single engine flying allowed in the mountains.
  • Flights to unserviced strips including all grass and gravel strips are not allowed unless authorized by the Director of Flight Operations.  Club aircraft are not permitted at Delta Air Park.

F.  Cross Country Flights

  • To fly outside of the Lower Mainland and beyond Seattle, licensed pilots must have acquired 20 hours Pilot in Command.
  • Licensed pilots may fly an overnight distance of 300 nautical miles from Boundary Bay provided they have had a mountain checkride.
  • Licensed pilots may fly long cross countries of more than 300 miles providing they have had a mountain checkride and have 100 hours total flight time.
  • Commercial students wishing to time build may fly long cross country providing they have completed 50% of the dual requirement for the CPL, have had a mountain checkride and have a total of 100 hours total time.  The 50% dual shall include a nightrating and no less than 18 hours instrument time.  The solo must include the 300 NM radius cross country requirement.
  • There shall be no night flying on cross country flights except in the Lower Mainland or the Nanaimo and Victoria areas or the route between Seattle and Boundary Bay or as far north as the river.
  • A trip request is required for all overnight travel and must be approved by the Director of Flight Operations prior to reserving an aircraft.

G.  Emergency Notification

  • All flights greater than 25 NM must file a flight plan.  All flights into the US must file a flight plan.
  • Should the pilot estimate he will no return to CZBB on time, dispatch must be notified.
  • In case of emergency, call the Club.  After hours, contact Clark Duimel at 946-4379/290-7886 or Pat Kennedy at 946-6711/290-7975.  Subsequent takeoffs must have the consent of the CFI/designate.

H.  RPP Holders

  • Currency requirements - if under 50 hours PIC, every 30 days; otherwise every 60 days.
  • Checkride requirements - if under 50 hours PIC, every 3 months; otherwise every 6 months.
  • Upgrade to 172/Warrior - two hour minimum with an instructor (2 flight minimum).
  • Cross country Mountain Checkride - the RPP must have 20 hours PIC including 10 hours cross country which must include two 150 NM cross country trips as prescribed by the Club.
  • Control Zone/Terminal Check - the RPP pilot must be signed off by an instructor and/or do an additional trip to Victoria.

I.  Waiver of Insurance

Licensed pilots paying the waiver of insurance will not be charged the full $5000 deductible but will be subject to a $250 charge for any damage incurred.

Damage to the aircraft not covered by the insurance such as damage to the interiors, damage through neglect such as not tying down cargo, etc. is not covered by the waiver and will be billed to the member at shop rates.

J.  Daily Minimum

Pilots are expected to fly 50% of time booked up to a maximum of 3 hours each day from October to April and 4 hours daily from May through September.  A $35 per hour not flown standby charge will apply in the case of pilots returning aircraft with less than the required time.

K.  Night Flights and After Hours Flying

Pilots wishing to book night flights or arrange for flying after hours must ensure the Club has money on account to cover the flight or a valid credit card imprint on file.  Members are not permitted to carry outstanding balances.

L.  Fuel Credits

Members fuelling aircraft at other airports must submit fuel receipts for credit and will be reimbursed at the Boundary Bay Airport fuel rate paid by Pacific Flying Club.

Members flying Club Aircraft in contravention of these requirements and the Club's Operations Manual shall be deemed responsible for operating an 'unauthorized flight' and may severally jeopardize their insurance coverage.
